LOVE ROCKS!

LOVE ROCKS!

I like that current term, that something “rocks”! My sense of the meaning, to try to capture it for someone not familiar with jargon, is that the thing being discussed excites, amazes, connects, works wonders, & basically somehow generates awe & wonder. And if anything does that, it’s love.

“Love covers a multitude of sins,” says James—it makes God actually “forget” all our sins (actually, He put them all onto Jesus so that He could really forget them!) & it makes us forget those of others. You might say it “re-formats the disc.”

“Love bears all/ believes all/ hopes all/ endures all.” (1 Corinthians 13) Love gives us a clean slate to write on, every single morning when we wake up—we get to start all over, feeling fresh. (Jeremiah, in the book of Lamentations, said it this say: “Your mercies are new every morning—Great is Your faithfulness, O God!”) We begin to understand that nothing is too hard, nothing is too difficult.

Love heals “broken bones,” and makes the mended place stronger than before the break.

Love reaches out when it doesn’t have to.

Love gives till there’s no more to give, & then reaches out for a miracle so it can give more!

Love never stops.

That’s why God chose to reveal Himself as LOVE!

LOVE ROCKS!

RELAX!

RELAX!

Most of us, most of the time, work too hard at finding God, pleasing God, trying to figure out what makes (the Christian) life “work.”

It’s really all about relationship. The picture I get is a huge rock that I can’t move, & then Daddy God gets a long lever & wedges it under the rock. He tells me to grab hold of the lever up close to the rock, where it looks like I’m doing all the work. Then He gets out on the end, maybe so far out (b/c it’s such a BIGGGG rock & such a LONGGGG lever) that I can’t even see Him, b/c He’s in the clouds, & then—miracle!—“I” move that rock!

Other times, it works differently—Maybe I speak to the rock what He tells me to, & it splits, or levitates, or explodes, or disappears. Still other times, I leap over it, or walk through it, or it disappears altogether.

His ways are limited only by my willingness to listen, & to do ( = “obey”).

How do you think you’ve gotten this far?

DOWNLOADING

“DOWNLOADING”

“TANKING UP”

“SUPERCHARGING”

These are some terms “in vogue” that could be used to describe an old concept—Scripture memorization.

Last November (2005), about a year ago, I got “inspired” (breathed into by the Holy Spirit <grin>) to memorize heavily by a statement I read by Donald S. Whitney in a book called Spiritual Disciplines. He challenged the reader: “You say you can’t memorize, but if I gave you $1,000 for every verse you memorized in the next week, how many could you do?” I did 40!

When I reached 60 or 70, I started looking for something more consistent—so I did the book of Philippians, the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5,6,7) & started on Colossians. (I got through the middle of chapter 2 before bogging down, and for the past 6 months I’ve been saturating myself in other ways.)

The neatest by-product, though, was totally unexpected. Sometimes I will hear a word or phrase (like “[dis]qualified” in the previous “nugget”) & it will “trigger” the scripture & encourage me or give me something to chew on. I’ve become a fire believer:

TO GET “SUPERCHARGED”

MEMORIZE SCRIPTURE

(especially set to music—that’s like dual hemi’s!)

QUALIFIED

December 10, 2009

“QUALIFIED”

Seems that our culture, technology, & the people we come in contact with conspire to make us feel either un-qualified (as though we could never make it up to the level we need to be at) or dis-qualified (as though we had at some point made it or had possibilities of making it, but are now being pushed out, down-sized, out-sourced, or in some other way being thrown onto the trash heap or relegated to some less-than-desirable category)

However, Scripture says that God has “qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the Kingdom of light.” (Colossians 1:12)

I like that. Whenever I hear the word “unqualified” or “disqualified” or some statement about needing to be “qualified,” this thought pops in to displace it—HE has qualified me—I QUALIFIED!—and nobody can “un-” or “dis-” me! He put me where HE wants me, & nobody but He can un-do it! And as long as I “hang” with Him, that ain’t gonna happen!!

I AM “QUALIFIED”!

THE “LONG VIEW”

December 10, 2009

THE “LONG VIEW”

*** THE “LONG VIEW” WINS! ***

*** Life is not a 50-yard dash! It’s a 500-mile marathon! ***

(This is the “flip side” of the “NOW” concept considered earlier.)

In order to determine accurately what really matters now, we have to take the “long view”:

—Where will I be in a year?

—Where will I be in 5 years?

—Where will I be in 10 years?

—Where will I be in 500 years?

“God has put eternity into the hearts of men,” says the Teacher (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Somehow, something internal tells me that there is something external, something eternal, something beyond this life, and that it matters.

To effectively evaluate the NOW, I must determine what is eternally valuable. What things are we told will last eternally? God, His Kingdom, people, His Word… These are the things I need to be investing in.

Dr. James Dobson comments that he’s never met a man on his deathbed who wishes he had spent more time working. Usually, the regrets are about not investing more in eternal values: family, people, the church, & God. (He has also quipped that we do not own a house—it owns us! How frequently it is that our “possessions” “possess” us and keep us from properly focusing on what is of eternal value!)

Where & how am I investing my time/ energies/ resources? Where is my heart? Because that ultimately is where my treasures are going to be! (Matthew 6:19)

Where & how we invest our time is one of the greatest indicators of what we value. (Dobson again: “A child spells LOVE ‘T-I-M-E’!”)

Do we find ourselves “forced” by time constraints? What “time” is it by the heavenly clock? Are we investing our time wisely? Are we “REDEEMING THE TIME”

MEASURE TIME (THE “NOW”) BY THE ETERNAL

ENEMIES

ENEMIES

*** YOUR ENEMY CAN SAVE YOU! ***

I once literally had this happen!

Working for SC Steel in GVL, SC, I had become enemies with the boss’s son—much of it the result of my own envy & bad attitude. (The guy was somewhat obnoxious, but that did not excuse my own “contributions” to the “cause.”)

The guy ran a large machine, & I went out to work on it while he as at lunch. I turned the air supply to the machine off & proceeded to unknowingly position myself in a dangerous position. Leaning in to work on the interior of the machine, I was under a large roller normally held up by the air supply I had turned off. When it came down, the tremendous weight (several hundred pounds) had me wedged at my rib cage, rendering me unable to breathe. Any movement simply allowed the roller to press tighter, & I was slowly suffocating, unable to breathe in & being forced to exhale what little air I had.

After what seemed an eternity, but must have been only minutes, he came back. I was able to whisper, “The black valve! The black valve!” & he was able to turn the air back on, raising the air cylinders holding the roller, & freeing me.

I wish I could say that I acted totally righteously toward him afterwards, but I did gain a true appreciation for my enemies & their place in my life.

Jack Frost credits the attacks of one of his most ardent foes with resulting in major changes in his attitudes & the ultimately prospering of his ministry and his message about the Father Heart of God.

One of the Proverbs (27:6) says, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend.” If we were wiser, we would probably consider our enemies friends, b/c their wounds often tell us truths about ourselves we desperately need to learn. David refused to touch Saul b/c he was the “Lord’s anointed,” and he allowed 12-15 years of persecution to transform him into a mighty man of God, who was able to “serve God faithfully in his generation.” (Acts 13) Maybe we too should view our enemies as anointed by God to transform us in the same way….

ENEMIES CAN SAVE YOU!

ENEMIES CAN BE YOUR BEST FRIENDS!

ENEMIES ARE A (GOOD) GIFT FROM GOD!

Having enemies can be one of God’s greatest blessings!

FAILURE

FAILURE

*** FAILURE = SUCCESS!?! ***

Even failure can be success. Thomas Edison, commenting on the search for a filament for the electric light bulb, viewed his “failures” as successful elimination of things that wouldn’t work!

The Lord planted this nugget in me many years ago, when my son (now 31) was a toddler. I was asking Him how I could possibly be a good father, considering the bad role models I had (a father who committed suicide & a step-father—your father—who was abusive and alcoholic). He pointed me somehow to the Israelites in the wilderness: somehow, this generation, who had failed to believe God & take the Promised Land, were able out of their failure to raise up a generation who could do what they couldn’t—take that same Promised Land. They failed, but allowed the ashes of that failure to birth the success of those following in their footsteps.

May God grant to us the same favor—that any of our failures would somehow become stepping stones for the success of those following!

FAILURE CAN = SUCCESS!

Someone said, “Be sure the ladder you’re climbing leans against the right wall!”

Real failure is to succeed at the wrong thing!

EMBRACE FAILURE! LET IT WORK FOR YOU!

PASSION & FOCUS

PASSION & FOCUS

*** BE PASSIONATE! ***

Life is meant to be lived passionately. Will we make mistakes? Sure, but sometimes even the mistakes can be passionately embraced! Look at Solomon, the son of an adulterous affair that included murder, or Paul, who passionately persecuted the same church he passionately embraced & proclaimed once his eyes were opened!

There’s even more hope for passionate coldness than for tepid lukewarmness—consider the church at Laodicea, whom God wanted to vomit up b/c of their lack of passion! (Revelation 3)

God gets passionate—He loves totally, hates totally, has a fierce jealousy for His Bride–& we’re made in His image, created to be passionate—about life, about love, about living! Jesus said, “I have come that they might have life and have it more abundantly”—we might even paraphrase this and say, “that they might have it MORE PASSIONATELY”!

BE PASSIONATE—GOD IS!

PASSION WINS!

LEARN WHAT YOU LOVE; THEN LIVE IT!

BE ME!

November 2, 2009

BE ME!

*** I CAN ONLY SHARE “ME” ***

I didn’t get to choose who I would be. I was put here, evidently for a purpose, exactly the way I am: Psalm 139:16—“fearfully and wonderfully made”!

My choice comes in the accepting of who I am, in the “doing” of what is truly “me.” I cannot be you; you cannot be me. If I am to be me in the fullest sense of the “ME-ness,” I have to come to terms with Me; I have to learn to love Me AS I AM, not as I wish to be! I can only give “ME” away as I learn to “receive” ME!

This is not selfishness. Airplane safety instructions tell you to put an oxygen mask on yourself first in order to be able to save others. Similarly, because of weight restrictions, guides in the Arctic carry only one emergency protective suit—for themselves—because if they don’t survive, the party they’re leading doesn’t stand a chance. (—taken from a footnote in a book titled The Blue Bear)

I AM “ME” & I NEED TO BE “ME” IN THE FULLEST SENSE OF WHAT THAT MEANS. Otherwise, I am depriving me of my destiny, you of the gift I could be, & God of the investment He made in Me!

The world needs me to become what I was meant to be. “Creation is groaning,” we are told, “waiting for the revealing of the sons of God” (Romans 8)—they are waiting for us to come into our true inheritance!! They’re aching for it with a longing created in the chambers of eternity, & it echoes out for us to become that authentic voice in the wilderness, that creative son/daughter we were destined to be!

BE YOU—

NO ONE ELSE CAN!

(Trying to be someone else just doesn’t work!)

GIVE!

November 2, 2009

GIVE!

*** GIVE YOURSELF AWAY! ***

Somehow, the “more blessed to give than to receive” (somewhere in the book of Acts) escapes us. Nancy, you have a great heart to give—just look at how you welcomed us on the spur of the moment! I love that about you! Don’t ever STOP!

Jim Elliott (martyred by the Aucas in Ecuador in 1956—see the movies Beyond the Glory & End of the Spear) said,

HE IS NO FOOL,

WHO GIVES WHAT HE CANNOT KEEP

TO GAIN WHAT HE CANNOT LOSE!

We give our lives—fall into the ground & die—daily, moment-by-moment. It’s always a choice, & the total accumulation of choices determines our rewards, & perhaps even our very destiny.

We can choose to look at it as INVESTING: putting deposits into the Bank of Heaven for the sake of eternal rewards. One proverb says, “He who gives to the poor lends to the Lord.” The fascinating thing about this verse to me, is that the Lord would allow Himself to become “indebted”! Imagine—in debt to me!

Not all of us have money or earthly goods to give, but we all have these to give:

TIME                                                   LOVE                                                PRAISE

ENERGY                                             FAITH                              “GOOD” DEEDS

THOUGHTS                                       HOPE                                        DILIGENCE

PRAYERS                          ENCOURAGEMENT                   FAITHFULNESS

REFUSAL TO ACCEPT OR “DISH OUT” GOSSIP                          JUSTICE

GLORY TO GOD                                         DEFENDING THE DEFENSELESS

A LISTENING EAR                        THANKFULNESS             OUR HEARTS

[and probably the list could go on & on….]

BE GIVING

GIVING IS

GOD MULTIPLIES! (rather than reducing!)
